Mini-Lesson

Design a Symbol

Mini-Lesson: Grades 4-6

Objective: Students will design a symbol to represent the Just Peace Summit.

1. Tell students that 30 young leaders from 18 different countries are meeting this week for the first-ever Just Peace Summit. The purpose of the meeting is for the young participants to discuss how they are working to make positive changes around the world. Ask: Why do you think the conference is called the Just Peace Summit?

2. Tell students that they will be designing a symbol to represent the Just Peace Summit. Pass out the timeforkids.com story, Uniting for Peace. As students read, have them jot down ideas about what they might want to incorporate into their symbol. Encourage them to think about the history and purpose of the conference.

3. Have students share their Just Peace Summit symbol with a partner. Then, ask volunteers to explain the thinking behind their design to the rest of the class.
