Students will practice predicting outcomes. 1. After students read the timeforkids.com news story The Flame Under Fire give students practice predicting outcomes. Direct students to the story's final paragraph: It says "the IOC will consider ending the traditional torch relay this year because of the anti-Chinese protests." Ask: What do you think will happen? Do you think the torch relay will continue or will it be stopped? 2. Encourage students to give examples from the story to support their prediction. For example, a student might point out that plans are underway in San Francisco to make sure the relay runs smoothly. Now that officials know that people might protest they will be better prepared. For this reason, the torch relay will continue. Another student might point to the fact that protests turned violent in Paris as evidence that the torch relay will be stopped. |
