Non-Fiction Literacy

Mini-Lesson: Grades 4-6

Objective: Students will respond to emotionally-charged news.

Pick an issue in the news that will prompt a strong response from students. Then ask them to respond to either specific statements or open-ended sentences like the following that will prompt rich discussions based on both the article and students' personal reactions:

I wondered....

I felt....

The first question I had was....

This article reminded me of....

I wish I could....

Tomorrow, I would like to....

Extend Learning: Have students write from the perspective of a person or group of people in a news story that is harmed. Some events are difficult for kids to understand and put into perspective without becoming fearful, but this strategy lets children be children while grappling with adult issues and helping them to feel more powerful--not helpless in light of such an event.
