Olympic News

Mini-Lesson: Grades 4-6

Objective: Students will write a news story about an Olympic event.

1. Take a poll: How many students watched the Olympics over the weekend? Then, ask: How can fans find out about the events that they didn't get to see on television? What information might they want to know?

2. Pass out the timeforkids.com story, The Games Get Going! As students read, have them make a list of questions that the article answers. Encourage students to share their findings with a partner.

3. For homework, challenge students to write a story about one Olympic event that they watch on television. Encourage them to make a list of important facts while they watch the event, then to organize the information into a story using "The Games Get Going" as an example. Remind students that their story is meant to inform fans who may have missed a favorite event.
