Northwestern Quake
![]() |
A powerful earthquake shook western Washington State last week. To Tim Jacobson, who works in Seattle, "the ground felt like it was Jell-O!" Nearly 300 people were hurt, and many buildings were damaged, including the capitol building in Olympia. Repairs could cost more than $2 billion. President Bush declared the region a national disaster area. Luckily, no one died from the quake's effects.
The damage could have been much worse. The state's newer buildings were designed to survive strong quakes. Kids in Washington schools learn how to stay safe during earthquakes.
Also, this quake started more than 30 miles below ground. If it had been closer to the surface, more people might have been seriously hurt. "We're just really lucky," said Governor Gary Locke.
