Big Decisions in Iraq

Members of Iraq's temporary government have been trying to write a constitution. A constitution is a set of rules a country follows. The Iraq constitution was due on August 15. But by the end of last week, Iraq's lawmakers were still struggling to agree on the rules.

Leaders from three groups are working on the constitution. One group, called the Sunni Muslims, was unhappy with parts of the constitution. Last Friday, another group, the Shiite Muslims, made changes the Sunnis wanted. The third group is called the Kurds.

The Iraqi people are set to vote on the constitution by October 15. The vote could go forward even if lawmakers cannot agree. But most Iraqi leaders said they would keep working to reach an agreement.
