Top 5 Apple Growing States

Crisp apples, tart or sweet, are a sure sign of fall. About 2,500 kinds of apples are grown in the United States. The U.S. is the second-biggest apple grower in the world. Most of our apples come from Washington State. Last year, the state grew more than half of the total U.S. crop. These states grew the most apples in 2004.

Each apple equals 10 million bushels. One bushel equals 42 pounds.

1. Washington: 144 million bushels
2. New York: 31 million
3. Michigan: 18 million
4. Pennsylvania: 10 million
5. California: 9 million
