Earthquake!
Spanish TranslationThe earth's crust shook on October 8. At 8:50 a.m., a powerful earthquake hit three countries in South Asia. The impact was felt in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan. "It was so strong that I saw buildings swaying. It was terrifying," said Hari Singh, who works near New Delhi, India's capital. Buildings crumbled and villages disappeared.
Stormy weather made it hard to rescue survivors. Planes had trouble landing in the heavy rain. Landslides blocked roads. Millions were stranded without food, water or electrical power. Officials fear that as many as 40,000 people were killed.
The earthquake left millions homeless. It also damaged hospitals and left people without clean drinking water. Health officials warned that unsanitary conditions could lead to the spread of disease.
Working Together to Help
When the weather cleared, helicopters and planes were finally able to
reach some of the hardest hit areas. Rescue workers delivered medical
supplies, food and water. About 30 countries took part in the relief
effort.
India and Pakistan have a history of fighting. But after the earthquake, India offered to help Pakistan. The two nations agreed to work together to bring relief to the devastated region.
