A Real People Person
When Marta Tienda was 10 years old, she spent the summer working on a farm with her family. Tienda's father, Toribio, was from Mexico. Like many migrants, he worked long hours at low-paying jobs to support his family.
Today, Marta Tienda is a sociologist. She studies people and how they live. She looks at information, including people's education or background, to answer tough questions. Tienda charts this data to try to learn such things as why some people are rich and others are poor. "I hope my work can help reduce poverty throughout the world," Tienda told TFK. "Kids deserve a better future."
