Shape Up, World

In the last few years, scientists have said that too many kids in the United States are overweight. A new study shows that this is not just an American problem. Kids in other countries are also eating too much junk food and have become less physically active.

The number of children in other countries who are overweight is expected to rise dramatically by 2010. For example, researchers say that if nothing is done, about 26 million kids in the European Union will be overweight or obese. The numbers are expected to increase in countries in the Middle East and Asia too.

Being obese is dangerous. It can lead to other serious health problems, including heart disease. Tim Lobstein is a doctor who worked on the study. Lobstein says that he hopes the study will make world leaders spring into action "to protect our children."
