Three Years of War in Iraq
March 20 marked the third anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. Since then, at least 2,318 members of the U.S. military have died. The war has cost close to $250 billion.
The mission was to find and destroy extremely dangerous weapons. Another goal was to remove Iraq's leader, Saddam Hussein. He had ruled since 1979. The U.S. did not find the weapons that it was seeking. But Hussein is in jail and on trial for crimes against Iraqis.
The people of Iraq have voted in free elections. Still, attacks on the 133,000 U.S. troops continue.
Last week, President George W. Bush promised to keep up the fight. "If I didn't believe we could succeed, I wouldn't put those kids there," he said of U.S. soldiers.
