Here Comes China

Spanish Translation

Liu Li has never met anyone who wears the clothes she makes. For two years, Liu has worked at a factory in southern China. The winter jackets she makes will be sold in the United States.

Liu tries to imagine the people who will buy the jackets. "I can't picture what their lives are like," she said. Most Americans would find it just as hard to imagine Liu's life.

Fair Trade?
Over the past 17 years, Liu's country has become much more powerful. China trades, or buys and sells, billions of dollars worth of goods with the U.S. every year. Many of the clothes, toys and shoes sold in the U.S. are made in China.

The two countries are big business partners. They are also business rivals. Chinese and American companies compete for oil and other resources.

Last week, China's President Hu Jintao met with President George W. Bush. Hu and Bush talked about how their two countries could work together in the years ahead. Each President wants to be sure that their trade deals are fair.

"We don't agree on everything," Bush said. "But we are able to discuss our disagreements in friendship."
