A Case of the Mumps
Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and other Midwestern states have the mumps. By April 19, Iowa alone had 975 known or suspected cases.
The mumps can be spread by coughing and sneezing. The virus causes painful swelling and fever. a mumps shot prevents most cases. This week, Iowa health workers have set up clinics to vaccinate young adults. College students who live in close quarters are more likely to spread the virus.
