The Purple Heart is given to members of the U.S. military who have been hurt in battle. So how did Annie Hassee, 11, get one? Scott Montgomery, 36, gave his Purple Heart to Annie. He was injured in Iraq. Montgomery was in an army hospital when he found a homemade card from Annie. He replied, and they became friends. In February, Montgomery gave his medal to Annie to thank her for helping him feel less homesick. "The medal was really special to Scott," Annie told TFK. "I couldn't believe that he would give it up for me."
