Good News For Grizzlies
Grizzly bears are making a comeback in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. As of last Thursday, grizzlies living in the park are no longer on the endangered-species list.
The bears were put on the list in 1975. There were fewer than 300 in Yellowstone. Since then, officials have spent $24 million to protect the bears. The efforts have paid off. There are now more than 500 grizzlies in the park.
Four other groups of grizzlies in the U.S. are still threatened. Other than the bears living in Yellowstone, the only grizzlies in the nation that are not threatened are in Alaska.
Grizzly bears, also called brown bears, stand about seven feet tall. They can weigh as much as 600 pounds.
