A Checkup On Wheels

Spanish Translation

Alan Shapiro is a doctor on the move. In fact, one of his offices has wheels!

Dr. Shapiro is the senior medical director of the Children's Health Fund's New York programs. The Children's Health Fund (CHF) treats kids all over New York City.

CHF is a nationwide group that brings free or low-cost health care to families who often can't afford to pay. It has programs in 13 states and the District of Columbia. In New York City, CHF works in partnership with the Montefiore Medical Center. Many of CHF's programs run doctors' offices on wheels.

On the Road to Health

CHF's medical vans visit homeless shelters, community centers, schools and camps. They reach kids and families who might otherwise have no medical care.

The vans have everything a regular doctor's office has, including exam rooms. A staff of doctors and nurses give checkups, treat colds and teach kids about good health habits. Dr. Shapiro says that each visit is "jam-packed."

Care Today for a Brighter Tomorrow

Many of the patients Dr. Shapiro treats haven't seen a doctor for a few years. Some are homeless. The poor are less likely to get medicines and care that could prevent lasting health problems. "If a patient has asthma that hasn't been managed well, it has a huge impact," Dr. Shapiro told TFK. "The child can't play sports, misses school and may get left back in school."

Dr. Shapiro and other CHF doctors are working to help these kids live active, healthy lives. That way, "they can reach their goals," he says.
