A Country in Flames
Fires raced across Greece last week. High temperatures and hot winds fueled the flames. As the fires spread, people used garden hoses, buckets of water and even brushwood to beat them back. Hundreds of firefighters from 21 countries joined the fight. By Wednesday, cooler temperatures and lighter winds helped firefighters put out many of the blazes.
Still, many farms, forests and homes were lost. At least 64 people were killed. Karolos Papoulias, the president of Greece, called the fires "a national tragedy."
