Dentists Say, Chew Away!

Is chewing sugar-free gum good for you? The American Dental Association (ADA) says yes. The group has awarded its Seal of Acceptance to Wrigley sugarless gum. The stamp can be found on toothpastes and mouthwashes. But this is the first time a chewing gum has ever received ADA approval.

The ADA gave the O.K. after it looked at research Wrigley did on gum chewers. The studies show that chomping the sugar-free treat can make teeth stronger. How? Because it produces more saliva, or spit. Saliva washes away acids that harm teeth. Now people can freshen their breath and keep their smiles bright, says Dr. James B. Bramson of the ADA.
