A Push for Peace
Last week, President George W. Bush began an eight-day visit to the Middle East. The President's first stop was Israel. The U.S. hopes to restart peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians. The two sides have a long history of fighting. Last year, they agreed to work toward reaching a peace treaty by January 2009. So far, there has been little progress.
President Bush met with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Earlier in the week, Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas had agreed to try again. "I come with high hopes," said Bush. He had plans to visit five more countries, including Egypt.
