Karina Franke
Karina Franke, 10, started a campaign in 2006 to save the endangered Karner blue butterfly (above). She wrote letters hoping to make it the New York State butterfly. Students voted and chose the red-spotted purple butterfly from five choices. This month, Karina found out that her choice came in second. Still, she is glad that she took a stand. "I learned that kids really do have a voice," she told TFK.
