Can We Stop a War?
The Palestinians and Israelis have been enemies for years. Both claim to have historic rights to the same land in the Middle East region of Asia. Israelis have had their own country since 1948. Palestinians want a country of their own, too. Over the past year and a half, the fighting over land has grown more and more deadly.
In recent weeks, Palestinian terrorists have attacked Israelis in restaurants, shops and at religious celebrations. Israel responded by sending its army tanks into Palestinian towns in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Last week, U.S. President Bush said "Enough." He announced plans to send Secretary of State Colin Powell to the area this week. Powell hopes to help the two sides stop fighting and work toward sharing the land peacefully.
Bush asked Israel's army to leave the Palestinian towns it invaded and to "show a respect for... the dignity of the Palestinian people." Israel's army had trapped Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in his ruined offices for days.
Bush also repeated his demand that Arafat stop the terrorist attacks on Israel. Bush urged nearby nations, where many support the Palestinians, to stay out of the fighting. "The storms of violence cannot go on," he said.
