The Fight over a Flag
On January 17--Martin Luther King Jr. Day--50,000 people gathered in front of the capitol building in Columbia, South Carolina. The Confederate flag flies from the capitol's dome. The crowd demanded that the flag come down, saying it is a symbol of slavery.
Other people are proud of the flag and want it to stay. The flag was carried by Southern soldiers during the Civil War.
Last week South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges said the flag should come down. But the final decision is up to South Carolina's lawmakers.
