Profiles in African-American History: Jacob Lawrence
Jacob Lawrence saw life in bright colors. He prepared to be an artist by observing Harlem, his New York City neighborhood. Lawrence listened to talented musicians and writers who lived there. He painted what he learned.
Lawrence, born in 1917, didn't study at an art academy. Blacks weren't allowed at such schools then. He learned art at class after school, the library and museums.
The famous people Lawrence painted include Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman. Since his death in 2000, Lawrence has been remembered as a great artist.
