Food for Thought
Kids are digging into learning! The National Gardening Association says about 25,000 U.S. schools now involve students in gardening activities. At Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in California, teachers use the school's garden for lessons. In math, kids measure plant beds. In art, they draw the garden.
Alice Waters, a famous chef, helped create the garden at King in 1997. Everything in it grows organically, without the use of harmful chemicals. The garden is part of the Edible Schoolyard program. Waters wants to turn lunch into a school subject. "It's about how we take care of the land, feed ourselves and communicate around the table," she explains.
