J.J. Returns Home to The Sea
On March 31, J.J. was set free into the Pacific Ocean. In 15 months at California's Sea World, the gray whale had grown to 31 feet and 19,200 pounds!
J.J. traveled by truck to the ocean. During the 11-mile ride, Sea World's Keith Yip stroked J.J.'s bumpy nose and looked into her enormous eyes. "Just saying my goodbyes, I guess," he said.
A boat then carried J.J. to a safe spot offshore. J.J. was lowered to the water to explore her natural home.
So far, J.J. seems to be doing just fine. She swims close to shore and is eating well. Researchers hope she will join up with other whales. She's lost the electronic markers that tracked her travels, but can still be spotted by airplane.
