Found: One Mean Raptor
When it comes to big, bad dinosaurs, most people think Tyrannosaurus rex is king. But last week scientists announced a discovery that might have made even powerful T. rex tremble. They found a giant foot-long claw belonging to a new kind of dinosaur. Dinosaur expert Don Lessem says the claw is so sharp and strong it would have been able to "rip other dinosaurs up from one end to another."
Scientist Fernando Novas uncovered the jumbo-size claw in the South American country of Argentina. He named the dinosaur megaraptor, which means "giant thief."
Megaraptor "was perhaps the nastiest dinosaur that ever lived," says Lessem. "We consider the raptor dinosaurs to be the fiercest because of their weapons, their speed and their intelligence." That's why velociraptors got to be the bad guys in Jurassic Park, he adds.
But velociraptors are short stuff compared to the giant megaraptor. Megaraptor is believed to have been 30 feet long. That's 10 times bigger than a velociraptor!
