A New Year, a New Leader
The results of Ukraine's presidential election are in--again. The nation on Russia's eastern border held one election on November 21. But its result was declared invalid after evidence of widespread cheating came to light.
So the nation voted again on December 26. In this round, Viktor Yushchenko defeated Viktor Yanukovych. Although Yanukovych protested the result, Ukraine's Supreme Court threw out the complaint last Thursday. He had been named the winner of the previous election, but thousands of Yushchenko supporters protested the unfair result.
In a New Year's greeting posted on his website, Yushchenko praised his supporters. "The vote has changed the country, and it changed us," he said.
