Italy's Hidden Treasures
Archaeologists in Italy's capital, Rome, have uncovered works of art buried for nearly 2,000 years. Roman officials unveiled the latest discovery on January 17. Hidden about 40 feet beneath the city, the mosaic shows nude men making wine by stomping on grapes. The mosaic is in nearly perfect condition.
Many artworks were buried beneath the hill where the Roman ruler Nero built his palace in 64 A.D. Some, such as the city view above, have been restored.
Marco Placidi helped find the wine-making mosaic. He told the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero about the discovery: "Finding myself face to face with that mosaic was one of the most emotional moments of my life."
