Spotlight: Bode Miller

Bode Miller, 27, sure knows the fastest way to the bottom of a mountain. The super-skier grew up on a mountain in Franconia, New Hampshire. On January 30, he won a gold medal in the World Alpine Skiing championships in Bormio, Italy.

Miller's style is unique. He occasionally waves his ski poles up into the air. "It's not exactly ski-instructor style," Miller admitted to TIME. Sometimes, his technique gets him into trouble, and he crashes. But Miller is usually successful.

Earlier this winter, he won six of 10 international ski competitions. Many skiiers take months to warm up for winter's long ski season. But not Miller. "I find my groove pretty quickly," he said. "Four or five days, and I'm there. It's easy for me."
