Mysterious Flawed Coins
Next time you toss a coin, see if it's a Wisconsin quarter. About 1,000 of the quarters have a flaw on their flip side that makes each one worth a lot more than 25 cents.
The marked coins--part of the 50 State Quarters Program--have an extra leaf on the left side of an ear of corn. The leaf tilts up on some quarters, down on others.
Either way, the quirky quarters have started a collectors' frenzy. Sets of the three--one regular quarter and two flawed--are selling for $1,100.
The U.S. Mint, which coined 453 million of the Wisconsin quarters last year, is investigating how the differences came about. A spokesperson said such variations are "very, very rare."
