An Arctic Adventure Ends Unexpectedly
On March 12, polar explorers Ann Bancroft and Liv Arnesen set out across the ice with high hopes. They were determined to become the first women to cross the Arctic Ocean.
Last Thursday, the polar pair's trek came to a disappointing end. They were forced to abandon the ice and their goal. Two companies that carry explorers and supplies into the area and handle rescue missions were in a dispute. The fight endangered the explorers. Two other polar teams were evacuated also.
Bancroft and Arnesen overcame such challenges as uneven ice and polar bear visits. The final obstacle was something for which they couldn't train. "This is out of our control, much like the weather can be," Bancroft told TFK via satellite phone. "We're trying to keep a positive outlook."
