New Strains for Old Rivals
Tensions between China and Japan heated up last week. Anti-Japanese protests broke out in several Chinese cities, including the capital, Beijing. Thousands of demonstrators criticized Japan's approval of a textbook that they say plays down abuses by Japan's military in China during World War II.
In Beijing, protesters attacked Japan's embassy and some of its businesses. Japan demanded an official apology. On Wednesday, Japan announced a decision to allow oil companies to drill in an area in the East China Sea that both countries claim as their territory.
The historic rivals were working to solve their differences peacefully. China asked its citizens to avoid future violence. Japan's foreign minister, Nobutaka Machimura, hoped a visit to Beijing on Sunday would ease tensions.
