A New Pope Is Elected

White smoke billowed from the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City on April 19. Then the bells began to ring. Across Rome, Italy, people began to run toward Saint Peter's Square. They wanted to catch a glimpse of the new pope.

The crowd cheered as Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, 78, of Germany appeared on the balcony. The new pope, who chose the name Benedict XVI, told the crowd he was a "simple, humble worker" for God.

As the first German pope in almost 1,000 years, Benedict will lead the world's 1 billion Roman Catholics. He speaks several languages, including Italian, English and German.

Edward Cardinal Egan of New York City said he had known the pope for many years. "You'll come to learn about his calm, secure faith, his intelligence, his vitality," Egan said.
