A Pallas kitten, a threatened species of wild cat found in western Asia, southeastern Siberia and China, nurses at the San Diego Zoo.

The first zoo in America opened 133 years ago in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Now there are 187 U.S. zoos with thousands of species, from the pygmy chimpanzee to the giant panda. Here are the zoos with the most species:
