The first zoo in America opened 133 years ago in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Now there are 187 U.S. zoos with thousands of species, from the pygmy chimpanzee to the giant panda. Here are the zoos with the most species:
1. San Diego Zoo and Houston Zoo (tied) 800 species
2. Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo 740
3. Denver Zoo 720
4. Toledo Zoo 715
5. St. Louis Zoo 700+
