A Meeting of Nations
More than 150 world leaders visited New York City last week. They were gathered to discuss the future of the United Nations and its goals.
The three-day meeting, which began on Wednesday, marked the 60th anniversary of the U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan urged members to act together to meet current challenges. Annan said that disputes among nations too often slowed progress. "We stand or fall together," he said.
Leaders discussed a plan to modernize the United Nations. They also talked about meeting the Millennium Development Goals, which aim to fight poverty and disease around the world.
Leaders were set to approve the plans on Friday. But many people believed that the final document could have set higher goals.
