An Energy Holiday in Georgia

Children in some Georgia schools enjoyed two "snow days" last week. Actually, Governor Sonny Perdue asked public schools to close to save fuel. He feared that Hurricane Rita would bring big fuel shortages. The school closings would save diesel fuel, because school buses would not run. No one would drive to school, which would save gasoline.

"If Georgians conserve together, we can weather whatever problems Rita brings our way," Perdue said. All but three of the state's 181 public school systems followed the governor's plan.

Many working parents, who had to find care for their kids at the last minute, were angry with Perdue's decision.
