Words in the news sometimes take the top slots. After Hurricane Katrina, visitors to Merriam-Webster.com looked up refugee, hurricane and levy. But over the past 10 years, these are the words that people have looked up most often.

1. effect (ih-fekt) noun an event, condition, or state of affairs that is produced by a cause
