The President's Pick Drops Out

Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination to be the 110th Supreme Court Justice last Thursday. President George W. Bush chose Miers last month, and she came under attack almost immediately. Miers, a lawyer for the White House, has never served as a judge. Concern about her lack of judicial experience was one reason that some people opposed her nomination.

The White House says that Miers dropped out because she did not want the Senate to examine private papers from her work as a White House lawyer. Bush urged her to go forward despite the obstacles that she faced, but Miers still chose to turn down the nomination. The President said that he would pick another court nominee soon.
