Trouble at the White House
I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby was Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff. Last Friday, Libby left his job after being charged with lying under oath.
Libby had testified in an investigation of a complex situation. News reporters somehow learned that a woman named Valerie Wilson worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). It is illegal to name an undercover CIA officer, because they do dangerous work. After reporters, in-cluding TIME's Matthew Cooper, wrote about Wilson's job, people called for an investigation. Who had revealed her secret?
Libby knew Wilson's identity but is not charged with revealing it. He is accused of saying untrue things in court under oath. Karl Rove, President Bush's top aide, wasn't charged, but his actions are still being investigated.
