A New Pick for the Court
President George W. Bush has chosen yet another nominee to succeed retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Bush's newest pick, Samuel A. Alito Jr., 55, was chosen after Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination. Some people criticized Miers as being too inexperienced.
Alito has almost 30 years of legal experience. He has served as a federal appeals court judge in Pennsylvania for the past 15 years. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan named him U.S. attorney for New Jersey. He "has more prior judicial experience than any Supreme Court nominee in more than 70 years," Bush said. Senate confirmation hearings for Alito are scheduled to begin on January 9, 2006.
