A Tornado Hits the Midwest

On November 6, a tornado tore through southern Indiana and western Kentucky. The storm spun a path of destruction 41 miles long, and its winds exceeded 158 miles per hour.

The twister hit early Sunday morning, while most families were asleep. The storm killed 23 people and injured 200. At least 400 homes were destroyed.

Officials said it was the deadliest storm to hit Indiana since 1974. President George W. Bush declared the state's hardest hit counties major disaster areas. "We're focused on getting these people back on their feet," said Eric Dietz, the director of Homeland Security in Indiana.
