A Is for Ancient
Kids have seen something like this in every classroom that they've been in since nursery school. It's a simple list of the ABCs, in order. Do you still remember the song?
But archaeologists were excited when they found an ancient example of this type of simple alphabet chart, or abecedary (a-bee-see-duh-ree), carved into stone. Scientists discovered the etchings in a rock wall in ruins 30 miles southwest of the ancient city of Jerusalem. They believe that the carvings are 3,000 years old! The lines of letters spell out an alphabet that shows the transition from Phoenician to Hebrew, two Mediterranean languages.
