Spotlight: Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf

Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, 67, made history in Liberia last month by becoming Africa's first elected female president. "I have a great responsibility to meet the expectations of Liberian and (other) African women," she told TIME. The native Liberian beat former soccer star George Weah in a close, contested election. Nicknamed the Iron Lady for be-ing a strict, no-nonsense leader, Johnson-Sirleaf wants to take her country on a course to peace and democracy. As Liberia's new president, she plans to work with others who will help her to achieve this goal. "We will look at every political party, ethnic group and religion and find people who meet our requirements," she said.
