Spotlight: Albert Shieh and Anne Lee
Albert Shieh, 16, and Anne Lee, 17, had a summer internship that lead them to a $100,000 prize. The teens, who worked together at a medical-research lab in Phoenix, Arizona, were frustrated with the computer software they were using. "We realized that we could make it work better," Anne told TFK. The technology that they designed spots genes responsible for autism, Alzheimer's disease and other disorders. It earned them top team honors at the Siemens Westinghouse Competition, a national math and science contest. "We combined different specialties," Albert says, "to make a good team." The shared prize money will help pay for college. Their software is already being used in labs around the world.
