Global Health 2006/Spotlight: Dr. Paul Farmer

In 1983, Dr. Paul Farmer went to work in the Caribbean nation of Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. He and his aid group, Partners in Health, try to bring modern medicine to those most in need. In 2005, the government of Rwanda asked Farmer to help in the African nation in the same way he had helped in Haiti.

"Poverty is the biggest obstacle to curing illnesses everywhere," Farmer told TFK Kid Reporter Emily Atlas. "It messes up our ability to diagnose and to treat disease." Still, he has hope for the worldwide fight. "With a lot of people together, we can have a big impact," he said.
