A Case for Kids' Health
Dora and Boots: See you in court. Two Massachusetts parents, along with two public-interest groups, announced last week that they intend to file a lawsuit against the owners of Nickelodeon and the Kellogg Food Company. The suit says that the companies are harming kids' health by pushing junk food.
A recent study found that food ads aimed at kids are mostly for fatty, salty and sugary snacks (See TFK, December 16, 2005). The lawsuit aims to stop companies from selling junk to viewers age 8 and younger.
Some believe it's up to parents to keep bad snacks out of kids' hands. But mom Sherri Carlson says that's hard to do when "our beloved Nick characters (are) plastered on junky snacks."
