The Best in Kids' Books

Author Lynne Rae Perkins is outstanding! Just ask the American Library Association (ALA). Last week, her book Criss Cross won the ALA's top honor, the Newbery Medal. Criss Cross was named "the most outstanding contribution to children's literature" this year. The book follows the lives of four teenagers in a small town. Perkins explores the young characters' search for the meaning of life and love.

The Newbery Medal is named after John Newbery, an 18th-century bookseller. It is awarded each year.

Children's book illustrator Chris Raschka won the 2006 Caldecott Medal for his picture book The Hello, Goodbye Window. It is about a little girl's visits to her grandparents' house.

The Caldecott Medal for illustrators is named after Randolph Caldecott, a 19th-century illustrator.
