A New Justice Joins the Court

Samuel A. Alito Jr. was sworn in last week as the 110th Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. "He will make all Americans proud as a Justice on our highest court," said President George W. Bush.

Bush nominated Alito, 55, last November to succeed retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. Alito was asked many difficult questions during his confirmation hearings. He was confirmed by a close final Senate vote of 58 to 42.

Alito joins the bench just months after a new Chief Justice, John G. Roberts Jr., joined the court. Alito is ready to take on the role of the nation's newest top judge. "I will do everything in my power to live up to the trust that has been placed in me," he said. Politicians as well as the public will be closely following the decisions made by the new Justices.
