A Town's Tragedy
Emergency workers from at least seven countries searched the site of a village in the Philippines last week. They were looking for survivors after a mudslide buried the small farming village of Guinsaugon.
On February 17, after two weeks of heavy rainfall, a wall of mud and boulders rushed down a nearby mountain. Officials fear that up to 1,000 people were killed. "We are absolutely crushed by sorrow," said Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
More rain, wind and shifting mud slowed rescue efforts. Aid groups appealed to the world community for help. UNICEF offi-cials said that nearly $2 million in cash and supplies has poured in.
