There's no denying that winning gold is thrilling. But for speedskater Joey Cheek, a medal was also the means to do good. The 500-meter champion donated to charity the $25,000 bonus that the U.S. Olympic Committee awards to winners. Cheek gave the money to Right to Play, a group that provides play and sports equipment to poor children.
Before his race, Cheek met with Johann Koss, the head of Right to Play and a four-time Olympic gold medalist. Koss donated his speedskating prize money to charity at the 1994 Games. "I felt that if I did something big, I wanted to give something back" Cheek says.
Cheek kept giving back. He donated another $15,000 after winning silver in the 1,000-meter race.
